I put down a deposit on a 250 inline-6 for my pickup. It is coming out of a ‘66 c10, was rebuild in 1998(he had the invoice) and has racked up all of 18K miles since then(truck was parked a few years after the rebuild due to a rotted frame).

Kinja'd!!!

It is complete from carb to pan, and runs smoothly(aside from a *ruined* water pump bearing). So all I’ll need to do is replace the water pump & gaskets, swap my single-pulley front accessories and figure out a throttle pedal setup(it has a cable, my 230 has a mechanical linkage). And I paid all of $350. for it.

This is good because the 230 in my truck is a worn out mess with multiple issues. I have tried time & again to get it to run smoothly without any luck.

Of course nothing can be simple though, and the 1 month old alternator on the truck crapped out on the drive to the guy’s house. So I need to replace that before he calls me to tell me the motor is pulled & ready to go.

Interestingly, he wants to buy the old cab on my truck despite it having rotted sills and a dented roof. I’m more than willing to sell it to him once I get my better cab done & mounted. So this motor may end up costing me even less when all is said & done.

Thank you for continuing to run an I6 and not replacing it with the ubiquitous 350.

I like the more obscure stuff too. Heck, I’m replacing my 3-spd manual with a 3-spd manual with electric overdrive out of a ‘57 chevy.

The only v8 that temps me is the LS.

Cool. I look forward to future updates on this vehicle. I like that you seem to be keeping it mostly original, or at least using period parts. That takes a lot of determination.

If I ever decided to do a restomod on a vehicle like this, or any older car that had an I6 from the factory, I’d like to do so with an unusual choice of engine. Imagine using the GM Atlas I6 in something like a ‘65 Mustang. Weird, sure, but definitely unique.

Yeah, I’m jazzed as hell.

This guy just wanted to get his money back on a parts truck he bought. It was a nice change from the usual ads for motors that read like this:

250 out of my ‘66 chevy. Yanked out to put in a v8. No idea of mileage. Smokes a little but runs great. Does not include carb, starter, flywheel or distributor. $1200.

[Picture of a oil-caked motor laying sideways on a pallet in a muddy yard with a rotted tarp draped half-over it.]

Yeah that’s most of them

OR the infamous - RUNS GREAT, NO SMOKE, PERFECT MOTOR. Yet it’s on an engine stand, looks like hell and there’s no way to test it now.

Yeah, I like my old stuff to feel like something old. Though I am putting disc brakes on it. Because the single-circuit drum brakes scare me.

I like the Atlas motors as a concept, but the hassle of making them work(custom aluminum oil pan, custom oil pickup, custom-machined flywheel, custom bellhousing) keeps them in pure dreamland for me.

Good choice on the brakes. It’s fine to leave a lot of stuff vintage, but brakes are one area in which you don’t screw around.

I know what you mean about the concept when it comes to swaps and modifications. Even if I had plenty of time and gobs of money I probably wouldn’t do most of the crazy swaps and conversions that I’ve dreamt up. I remember a tale of Johnny Carson complaining about his commute from Malibu to the NBC studios in Burbank. His nephew suggested he look into using a helicopter. When he got the price, $600 (although I can’t remember if this was one-way or round trip), he balked at it, even though he could easily have afforded it. I’d probably be the same way. One does not stay wealthy by spending a lot of money...

Very nice, I’m happy to see you put in a period straight 6 instead of a 350.

Do you run a throttle linkage or cable on your existing 230? If you run a cable now it may be easier to just attach it to the new motor or swap on a carb that supports a throttle cable.

The 230 is a linkage, the 250 has a cable. It looks like the cable was jerry-rigged on the donor truck from something else, so I’m not sure if I can set it up to run with my linkage, or if I have to find some setup that lets me keep the stock pedal but have a cable setup from it.

Most linkage pedals I’ve seen can’t adapt for a cable. Is your pedal hanging or floor mounted?

In my old jeep it’s floor mounted and I’d have to replace it to get a throttle cable. We’ll I could probably engineer something but it’d be a lot of work...
